To Devein or Not to Devein Shrimp

A shrimp's “Vein” is actually the digestive tract, usually a thin, dark tube of shrimp poop. There are), which are not recommended as they can have a bitter taste and are easy to remove. The first and easiest way is to simply ask your fishmonger. No tools are required for this method.


But it's also very easy to do yourself. Use a paring knife to make shallow cuts in the shell on the back of the shrimp from head to tail, and remove the spine. Alternatively, you can buy a curved plastic tool for under $5 to quickly peel and devein on Amazon.


Cooked Shrimp


Just don't. "Cooked" shrimp is most often referred to as "cooked" shrimp. They're usually rubbery and bland, already cooked, so there's no room for improved flavor, and they dry out when added to a dish.
